Toronto, June 30 (Canadian-Media): Canada's 150th birthday was celebrated at a picnic in High Park this afternoon by more than 200 Syrian newcomers who were joined by Toronto Mayor John Tory and Arif Virani, Member of Parliament for Parkdale-High Park, Councillor Sarah Doucette (Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park), media reports said.
"Celebrating Canada's 150th birthday with some of the people who have so recently made this city their home is fitting," said Mayor Tory. "I'd like to congratulate COSTI on their milestone as well and to thank them for the support they have shown in this settlement effort."
Approximately six thousand Syrian newcomers, since 2015, have settled in Toronto.
Toronto Newcomer Office, in partnership with COSTI -- a community-based multicultural agency -- had been working as part of its Refugee Resettlement Program to provide increased supports and services to new Torontonians and their sponsors.
COSTI -- founded in 1952 by the Italian community and had been helping immigrants settle in their new home for the last 65 years – had been helping frame the society of the city, province and country and had been providing employment, language training, settlement and social services to all immigrant communities, new Canadians and individuals in need of assistance.
The new Torontonians present enjoyed a lunch with Mayor Tory and children's activities.
“We are honoured to be working together with the City of Toronto Newcomer Office to successfully integrate newcomers to the city and to partner for this special occasion,” said Mario J. Calla, Executive Director of COSTI. “It’s an opportunity for us to reconnect with our clients and to mark both Canada’s 150th anniversary and COSTI’s 65th anniversary.”
