Whitehorse (Yukon), Apr 30 (Canadian-Media): A group of Whitehorse (Yukon) volunteers learned to create Wikipedia pages about Yukon First Nations people, events and culture and to customize these to ensure more Indigenous content was available on one of the most visited websites in the world, media reports said.
The Indigenize Wikipedia meetup at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre this weekend was the first of its kind in the North, according to organizer Heather Steinhagen.
"The world is in need of this information. It exists elsewhere but the first thing we do is go to Google and search up a name and if that name doesn't show up on Google, we're probably going to toss that idea out the window and research someone else," said Steinhagen.

For this project no Wikipedia experience was required.
The event included everything from how to make a Wikipedia account to what information to include.
The Indigenize Wikipedia meetup page has a list of topics suggestions for Wikipedia pages, like late Yukon trapper Alex Van Bibber, the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, and the document Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow.
Most are highlighted red, which means there isn't an article currently on Wikipedia.
"Our mission is to turn all the red topics into blue, which indicates there is an article," said Jacqui Usiskin, a participant.
Usiskin worked on a page about Adeline Webber, the Teslin Tlingit woman who was responsible for creating the Whitehorse Aboriginal Women's Circle and raised awareness about Indigenous women's rights.
"I think it's a minimum that we can do," said participant Sara Andrade, about creating pages featuring Indigenous people and issues in Yukon.
Sara Andrade, another participant worked on a page about the Umbrella Final Agreement, the overall Yukon First Nations land claims agreement.
"Wikipedia is huge and every time you look for something, it's always one of the first pages that comes up on your phone or computer," said Andrade.
"[There are/were] some really awesome people who live up here and everybody should know about them."
Wikipedia users were not permitted to write whatever they liked on the site.
Information reportedly should be cited from reliable sources and must be verifiable, according to the site's guidelines.
Saturday's meetup included research resources like books from the Whitehorse library, online resources and scholarly articles.
But the meetup was faced with an obstacle that might make it difficult to fully Indigenize Wikipedia — elder knowledge.
More research was required, said Steinhagen, to make elder knowledge a valid resource.

Toronto, Apr 9 (Canadian-Media): Indigenous students from OCAD University (formerly the Ontario College of Art and Design, a public university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) in Toronto worked to bring to life cultural artifacts stored away at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) by creating new digital artwork, media reports said.

Nine students in OCAD University's Indigenous Visual Culture program were able to each select an Indigenous cultural artifact from the museum's collections to stud, develop these in digital art projects and once completed will be stored in a digital space on the ROM's website.
Megan Feheley started working on her project in early September and found about three Cree-made hoods.
Feheley's digital project is a 3D rendering of the Woodlands Cree hood she's been spending time with. The final project will have interactive storytelling and sound elements.
"My hood might be digital but it's still a hood, it's still wrapped up in all that tradition and understanding," she said.
The overall project was conceived last summer with the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, which was looking for Indigenous participation in Canada 150 in the form of a web project.
Bonnie Devine, an associate professor at OCAD University and the founding chair of the Indigenous visual culture program, said the idea was that Indigenous students would benefit by gaining access to the materials that are located in the ROM archive, and their experience could be translated into something that would reach across the province to other Indigenous populations.
Students have been working all year on their individual projects and will soon begin finalizing conceptualizations.
"We see this as an opportunity to 'requicken' these objects, to bring them back into their role in the community," she said.
"They have work to do, the objects do. They have a story to tell and our communities have been hungry for those stories."

The trust and partnership of all our residents is extremely important to the ongoing success of the Toronto Police Service and its officers. Today, Chief Saunders has withdrawn the service's application to participate in this year’s Pride parade so that he and the Toronto Police Service can focus on the objective of unity and restored confidence.
This is important work, and I thank the LGBT2Q community organizations who are engaged in improving relations with police at this difficult time. I'm confident that Chief Saunders will take meaningful action to address the issues that have been raised. I intend to continue to offer constructive leadership in this process whenever it will be helpful.

Ottawa, Apr 2 (Canadian-Media): An Indigenous history course 'Indigenous Canada' created by the University of Alberta launched one year ago had been considered the most popular course in Canada and has already had more than 20,000 enrollments, media reports said.
'Indigenous Canada' was jointly developed by faculty of the Native Studies program working with other academics, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, teaches Canadian history from the Indigenous perspective and addresses pre-contact as well as contact with settlers.
The course with its free online program and its 12 modules, available through Coursera, reportedly called 'Indigenous Canada,' can reportedly be taken at a student's own pace or with a cohort of others who will learn together, includes modern teachings about present-day Indigenous movements such as Idle No More.

Idle No More is a grassroots movement founded in December 2012 by four women: three First Nations women and one non-Native ally and comprises the Aboriginal peoples in Canada consisting of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and their non-Aboriginal supporters in Canada, and to a lesser extent, internationally. This movement was a reaction to alleged legislative abuses of Indigenous by federal government, and has included round dances in public places and blockades of rail lines.
Paul Gareau, assistant professor with the U of A's Native Studies program and the academic lead had reported an overwhelmingly positive response to the course.
"A lot of Indigenous experiences in Canada have been silenced by a normative settler vision of Canada and the history of it," said Gareau and added,
"This course focuses on telling an Indigenous experience of Canada."

"What's really great about this course is that it touches Indigenous people as much as it does non-Indigenous people," said Paul Gareau.
'My eyes have been opened', Shirley Jubinville who did not know she was a Sixties Scoop survivor, reportedly said.
The Sixties Scoop reportedly refers to an estimated 20,000 Indigenous children across Canada who were taken from their families by child welfare officials from the 1960s through to the 1980s and placed with non-Indigenous families.
Many of these children had experienced not only loss of culture, language and identity, and even physical and sexual abuse.
Jubinville, Sixties Scoop survivor was also taken from her family when she was young and adopted into a white family.
Luckily for Jubinville, her adoptive parents were loving and treated her as part of the family but for most of her life she had been reportedly dealing with an identity crisis.
"I lived all my life thinking I was basically a white person because I was raised in a white family," she told CBC's Radio Active. "But every time I looked in the mirror, there is this Native person staring back at me."
Inspite of being keen to learn more about Indigenous culture, she was hesitant initially to enrol for Indigenous Canada course.
"It involves a lot of emotions and feelings that come with adoption and not knowing your culture and then all of a sudden finding out that I'm not the only one in the world who doesn't know anything about her culture," Jubinville said.
But after signing for the course, Jubinville realized there was a whole new culture of hers to explore that she didn't think she had access to originally.
"I wasn't surprised until I realized how much I missed out on," she said and added,
"What I've learned in the last six weeks has been amazing. It's a completely different world," she said. "My eyes have been opened."
Gareau said the course is created and run for people like Jubinville.
"To create that balance in presenting things from an Indigenous perspective is fantastic," he said. "It's exactly what we're trying to do in Native Studies in the University of Alberta and as Indigenous people as well."
