The typhoon is the most powerful to hit Japan since 1958 when a record-setting storm that killed hundreds of people there.
Hundreds of thousands of homes, according to Reuters, experienced power outage and one deadly landslide was reported outside Tokyo.
A combination of more frequent and severe storms, rising seas and global development along vulnerable coastlines in recent years have caused an escalation of overall global costs from hurricane and typhoon damage.
