United Nations, Oct 16 (Canadian-Media): World Food Day (WFD) observed on Oct 16 every year is a day of action dedicated to tackling global hunger. On this day people from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate worldwide hunger from our lifetime, media reports said.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations was founded in 1945. The member countries of the FAO established WFD in November 1979 at the organizations 20th General Conference and called for the observance of World Food Day on 16 October, 1981. Since 1981, WFD has been held every year.
According to FAO, 670 million adults and 120 million girls and boys of the age group 5 to 18 years are obese and 40 million children under 5 are overweight. Around 820 million people suffer from hunger.
World Food Day 2019's theme is “Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger World". It focuses on tackling global hunger. Several organisations which are concerned with food security like International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Food Program, etc observe WFD to generate awareness globally for those who suffer from hunger with their main focus on that food is a basic and fundamental human right.
