Uttar Pradesh (India), Mar 20 (Canadian-Media): The hanging to death of four Delhi gang rape convicts in the Nirbhaya case resulted in a festive atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, media reports said.
The bus’ cleaners Mukesh Singh and Akshay Thakur, fruit-seller Pawan Gupta and gym instructor Vinay Sharma had been accused of the crime of gang-raping a young woman Nirbhaya in the bus in 2012, brutally assaulting her and finally throwing her off the bus.

The victim had fought for her life for nearly two weeks in a hospital in Singapore, where she had been airlifted, on December 29, 2012 before succumbing to her injuries.
Although the culprits were convicted within a year and their death sentence upheld by the Supreme Court in 2017, but the delay in execution was due to the lawyers representing these men citing presence of the legal remedies available to the convicts to delay their hanging.
The young woman's parents, especially her mother, continued with the legal battle for eight years to see the culprits hanged.
As soon as the villagers heard about the news on Friday regarding the hanging of the convicts, they gathered at the door of Nirbhaya's grandfather Lal Ji Singh to celebrate the day for the country's daughters.
It was demanded by Singh that the government announce March 20 as 'Nirbhaya Diwas,' which means Day of Fearlessness.
