Washington, Jan 22 (Canadian-Media): Failure to reach an agreement between US lawmakers' -- US President Donald Trump's Republican Party and the opposition Democrats -- on ending the government shutdown before the start of today had resulted in a large number of US federal employees to remain at home Monday without pay, media reports said.
The shutdown had already cast a dark cloud on the first anniversary of Trump's inauguration as president and large crowds showed their protest against Trump and his policies by marching through major US cities over the weekend .

"The president's focus is making sure we get the government reopened. It's outrageous that Democrats are holding our national security hostage," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was reported to state early Monday to television network ABC.
Although essential federal services and military activity reportedly would continue but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the US shutdown.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had promised to address this issue of Democrat concerns of undocumented immigration, at the earliest and was reported to say,
"Should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on February 8th, 2018, assuming that the government remains open, it would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address DACA, border security and related issues."

But House Republicans had told reporters they refused to bind by any agreement reached in the Senate to address immigration.
