The shutdown had already cast a dark cloud on the first anniversary of Trump's inauguration as president and large crowds showed their protest against Trump and his policies by marching through major US cities over the weekend.
Although essential federal services and military activity reportedly would continue but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the US shutdown.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had promised to address this issue of Democrat concerns of undocumented immigration, at the earliest and was reported to say,
"Should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on February 8th, 2018, assuming that the government remains open, it would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address DACA, border security and related issues."

But House Republicans had told reporters they refused to bind by any agreement reached in the Senate to address immigration.
