Ottawa, July 14 (Canadian-Media): An announcement was made by the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau on July 13 that Her Majesty the Queen, on Trudeau's recommendation, had approved the appointment of Ms. Julie Payette as the next Governor General of Canada.
Outgoing Gov. Gen. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston will be succeeded by Payette , who will be the Queen's new representative in Canada, the government said.
The installation ceremony for Payette will take place in the fall.
Payette, francophone and an anglophone, will be the fourth woman to be the governor general of Canada and would get an official residence at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa.
Payette, who is 53-year-old is from Montreal and speaks six languages including English and French
She would be the 29th governor general of Canada and would draw a salary of $290,660.
Payette is a computer engineer with a commercial pilot licence and was picked from among 5,330 applicants in 1992 to be one of four new astronauts with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
She had participated in two space flights to the International Space Station and served as the CSA's chief astronaut between 2000 and 2007.
Payette is also an engineer, scientific broadcaster and corporate director, and is an administratrice de sociétés certifiée (ASC is equivalent to the Institute of Corporate Directors, Director [ICD.D] designation).
Payette was a recipient of many distinctions and 27 honorary doctorates and is an accomplished athlete, pianist and choral singer.
She is a Knight of the Ordre national du Québec and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Payette had served as a board member for Drug Free Kids Canada and was listed as a National Champion of the Trans Canada Trail.
She pledged herself to the values of tolerance, openness and working together.
