Novavax would become the first drugmaker to produce their COVID-19 vaccine in Canada subject to regulatory approval in Canada.
"We’ve signed a memorandum of understanding with Novavax to produce their COVID-19 vaccines at the new [National Research Council] Royalmount facility in Montreal," Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.
Canada has been seeing a worsening vaccine shortage after the delivery of promised vaccines by the producer Pfizer halted last week.
With production not beginning at least until July when Canada’s vaccination strategy would be nearing its end.
Adhering to his promise that all Canadians who wish to be immunized against the disease will be able to do so by September, Trudeau said that Novavax vaccine will prove to be useful in dealing with possible future outbreaks or different strains.
