New York, Oct 13 (Canadian-Media): UN observance of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) started in 1989 is observed every year on Oct 13 to raise risk-awareness and disasters reduction, UN reports said.
2019 Theme for IDDRR is to reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services including health and education facilities and developing their resilience by 2030.
There is a need to ensure that schools and hospitals are built in appropriate location with proper enforcement of hazard-appropriate planning regulations and building codes. Keeping in mind the fatal and catastrophic earthquakes and tsunamis, provision of potentially life-saving utilities and services such as food and water supply, energy, telecommunications and transport are of utmost importance.
