Washington, Feb 17 (Canadian-Media): The world premier of Jeremy Guy’s documentary feature PURDAH would take place in competition at the International renowned Cinequest Film and VR Festival in San Jose California, running Feb 27 to Mar 11, media reports said.
Documentary feature PURDAH is reportedly a visually arresting, insightful and inspiring story of an independent-minded young woman, Kaikasha Mirza who belonged to the Muslim family in Mumbai, India.
Mirza developed great passion for cricket as a young woman, but was forbidden to play and was allowed to watch the play only in her burka.
After months of great perseverance and persistence, Kaikasha eventually won her father to allow her to remove her burka and to participate in the cricket.
Eventually Kaikasha succeeds in becoming one of only a few Muslim women cricketers in all of Mumbai.
Kaikasha then started to follow her dream of playing for the prestigious Mumbai Senior Women’s Cricket Team.
Meanwhile, Kaikasha’s parents told her that if she fails to become a professional cricketer within two years , they will arrange her marriage.
Kaikasha knows that after she gets married, her husband may not allow her to play.
She fears that her dreams of playing for the prestigious Mumbai Senior Women’s Cricket Team would be completely shattered.
Kaikasha’s eldest sister, Saba, desires to become a model, but has to tolerate harsh criticism for wearing a niqab or purdah to interviews.
Heena, the youngest sister also cannot fulfill her dream of becoming a fashion designer or a singer because of her parents' poverty.
The documentary feature PURDAH depicts how the the three sisters have to face so many obstacles due to the taboos and customs of their religious beliefs and how they have to submit to the wishes of their father who believes strongly that women should not work.
